Agenda Day 2 – April 24, 2020

(Agenda shown in your browser’s local time)

Microservices Orchestration and Integration using Workflow Automation

How can we ensure visibility of cross-microservice flows and provide status and error monitoring? How do we guarantee that overall flows always complete, even if single services fail? Or how do we recognize stuck flows so that we can fix them?

Bernd will explain how to do all of this without introducing monolithic workflows that clash with microservices principles and reveal how to balance orchestration (using a workflow engine) with choreography (using events).

Three Products – One Microservice Ecosystem at Cox Automotive

Cox Automotive is the world’s leader in vehicle remarketing services and digital marketing and software solutions for automotive dealers and consumers. A key to success at Cox is to modernize our Dealer track Registration & Title processes by moving towards a microservice architecture provided the means to create multiple solutions from an ecosystem of services. By using Camunda, we were able to create three products from a single solution by creating independent processes to handle manual and automated tasks in unique ways.

In this talk we will share:

  • How we turned a solution that was originally meant to only process individual transactions into a fleet solution and an entirely separate lending solution
  • How to use Camunda Spring Boot Starter to control embedded engines
  • How process models can improve the deal handling experience and adjust capacity for new markets

Migrating from Legacy BPM to Camunda

Many organizations want to replace their legacy or homegrown BPM solutions and migrate to a next-generation, cloud-based process automation platform. Such a migration can be a complex, painful, and expensive business – even if done right. This session explains how to successfully migrate from entrenched BPM environments to the Camunda platform.

The session addresses:

  • How to estimate your migration scope and timeline;
  • How to develop your migration business case;
  • How to design your migration “factory” (your migration approach and execution model);
  • How to define your go-forward enterprise workflow governance and service models; and other essential topics.

How to (not) roll your own BPMN diagram editor – An introduction to bpmn-js and its friends

This session introduces bpmn-js: An extensible BPMN toolkit that serves as the core editing foundation in the Camunda Modeler as well as Cawemo. We start with embedding the tool in a simple web-based modeler. Step by step, we will extend it and end up with our very own — special — BPMN editing experience. Nyan cats and dark mode included.

Process Automation Reimagined at Capital One

Capital One Retail Bank’s back-office processing for legal documents was manual and error-prone due to its complex intricacies of various state and jurisdiction based decisions and actions. With the help of Camunda’s BPMN and DMN engine, we are able to automate a major share of the processing and also reduce errors to near zero.

Additionally, as part of an effort to address our customers’ needs faster and save operation costs, Capital One is going through a transformation to modernize our case management systems. After relying on a number of vendor products for the longest time, we are modernizing using Camunda. Come see what case management reimagined looks like using Camunda.

Unlocking the Power of Custom Tooling Through Camunda Resources

In this session, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP) will share how they built a custom workflow visualization and dependency application leveraging Camunda resources to improve the experience for the BPMN development team. Our flows make considerable use of sub-flows which can result in lost time checking out BPMN source to navigate between the flows and was opaque to non-technical users. It was also challenging to differentiate which sub-processes were being reused in other processes. With the use of Camunda’s REST APIs and the bpmn-js library, OTPP designed a custom application called the Workflow Viewer. The Workflow Viewer provides a visual representation of the workflows to help navigate and analyze their 130+ business processes. It is now being used for a variety of purposes by developers, testers, and business analysts etc.

Panel Discussion: “Digital transformation, observability and automation: Chicken or Egg?”

Digital transformation has been a popular trend for the better part of the last six years, yet we’re still far from reimagining business processes, culture, and customer experiences in their entirety. As we embark on a new decade and look ahead to the years to come, we begin to explore how developments in observability, microservices, and process automation will impact our technologies of the future, in addition to the companies we work for. This panel will delve into places where these technologies overlap, exploring the impact they have on each other and on our world as a whole.

Panelists

  • Bernd Ruecker – Chief Technologist and Co-Founder, Camunda
  • Mike Ryan – VP of Software Engineering, JP Morgan Chase
  • Christine Yen – CEO, Honeycomb

The Goldman Sachs Workflow Platform powered by Camunda

Get a behind-the-scenes look how Goldman Sachs built one of the largest and most advanced process automation platforms in the industry. Used by more than 40,000 employees running over thousands of unique workflows, the team at Goldman Sachs created a vital backbone for automating many aspects the company’s business. This presentation provides an overview of how Goldman Sachs has embraced BPMN and DMN and its journey to develop an internal automation platform that accelerates engineers and enables non-engineers to deliver digital transformation at enterprise scale. At its core, the platform is powered by Camunda’s open source modeling tools and BPM execution engine augmented with Goldman Sachs extensions and integrations.

The presentation covers the following topics:

  • Model-driven process, task, data, decision and forms development on the platform
  • An enterprise scaled architecture and management plane to support provisioning, deployment, execution and runtime management
  • A state-of-the-art firm-wide task management tool
  • A streamlined SDLC that supports robust change risk management
  • An experience that accelerates engineers and enables participation from non-engineering citizen developers
